About the Department

The Department of Forensic Medicine features Medico-Legal experts who offer students a thorough comprehension of the medico-legal dimensions within health sciences, including components of toxicology and ethics.

Key Competencies encompass:

  • Mortuary Facility & Post-Mortem Examination: Our department has state-of-the-art mortuary facilities, and students gain hands-on experience in post-mortem examinations.
  • Expert Opinion: We specialize in offering expert opinions, ensuring that our students develop the skills necessary to provide informed and reliable assessments in medico-legal cases.
  • Attending Courts: Students are actively involved in court proceedings, gaining practical insights into legal procedures and the role of forensic medicine in the justice system.
  • Teaching and Research Activities: The department collaborates closely with the regional Police and Transport Departments of the Government of Tamil Nadu, conducting dedicated workshops and awareness programs.

Additionally, active involvement in the Poison Control team and the Collaborative Child Response unit is a distinctive feature.

Students receive training on fundamental ethical issues and are introduced to procedures such as post-mortem examinations, examinations of rape victims, evaluations of individuals accused of rape, and various types of autopsies.

The department imparts knowledge to students on examining skeletal remains and forming opinions. Moreover, students gain insights into medico-legal issues related to Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) involving admissions to the hospital.
